About Humanists of

HOW is an
independent, secular, educational organization dedicated to human
advancement through reason, science, and democracy.
We maintain an active and visible presence in Washington state as
we work toward a more Humanistic world.
For our program meeting topics and speakers, we draw upon the resources within our own organization, as well as those within the Northwest activist community at large. These meetings range from formal lectures to lively discussions on issues related to Secular Humanism and free thought: First Amendment rights, church-state separation, pro-choice issues, censorship, death with dignity, world peace, minority and women's rights, environmentalism, prison reform, abolition of the death penalty, drug hysteria, and many more. We do more than talk about these issues -- we implement our convictions through activism. We believe, as did Thomas Paine, that those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undergo the fatigue of supporting it. Realistic hope for future change rests with us. Only a real commitment to human values, freedom, compassion, and justice -- without reliance on imaginary supernatural beings or forces -- can facilitate change and human progress. The voice of our activism is The Secular Humanist Press: Freethought Journal of the Humanists of Washington. The philosophy of Humanism is a product of the evolution of humanity, with a long and rich history. Our sample newsletter provides a glimpse into contemporary Secular Humanism. The complete story of the origins, growth, and influence of
Humanism is too large for even a good sized library.
However, as a basic reference guide for your inquiry, we
recommend The Philosophy of
Humanism, by Corliss Lamont. This
book is available from us, or at bookstores and public libraries. Our activities are open to the public and guests are always most welcome. Feel free to join us for any meeting or social event which interests you. We look forward to meeting you. Sincerely, Barbara Dority, President What is a Humanist? HOW Statement on Law Reform |
